Payment terminal setup is usually quite intimidating and often the cause for support centre calls. We’ve gone to great lengths to create a user-friendly onboarding experience we like to call digital unboxing.
Smart terminal setup should be an experience instead of a chore. Our digital unboxing experience walks the merchant through a workflow guiding them efficiently through their device setup. Rather than following the steps of an instruction manual, merchants only need to follow the easy, engaging prompts on the device screen.
The PBS app tours merchants through their new device setup with custom, graphical workflows, providing an innovative, engaging, and branded digital unboxing experience.
Our app comes pre-installed on smart devices and launches even before the merchant connects to their network. When the device turns on the first time, there’s a welcome message for the merchant before they go through the setup workflow. This digital experience allows merchants to see all the various features and functions offered through the POPcodes app, including the self-help communications capabilities.

Old school organizations stick to traditional unboxing. That’s when merchants receive a hard copy welcome kit with their new terminal. This welcome kit is a printed set of materials and instructions that merchants have to read and follow to figure out how to set up their devices.
The reality is most merchants don’t read those instructions. Instead, they either try to plug in their device and figure it out on their own, or they get on the phone and call tech support. Both of these methods waste time and create a headache right out of the gate. We do away with traditional unboxing because it’s time-consuming, wasteful, and creates additional hurdles for clients when there are updates needed for printed manuals.

Communications Through the PBS App
One major advantage of our digital unboxing experience is that merchants are readily introduced to the idea that the PBS app turns their smart terminal into a communication device.
After they digitally unbox their device, every time the merchant powers on their terminal, the PBS app can send them a power-up message before they open their doors for business. We know that the most opportune time to communicate with the merchant is before customers are in the store. If there are any issues or alerts, merchants will receive a helpful notification before their first transaction of the day.
Terminal devices typically talk to a payment gateway, and our system communicates outside of that gateway. Even if the payment gateway is down, acquirers and ISOs can still communicate to their merchants.
